A new device for writing with eyes.
A new device for drawing and writing through eye movements has been developed by a
CNRS researcher at the Centre de recherche de l'institut du cerveau et de la moelle
épinière (CNRS / UPMC / Inserm). As if it was a pen, the user can trace letters,
numbers, shapes, signature, and even make drawings with his gaze through a very
simple technique including an eye tracker (1) and a computer screen. This performance
is based on a visual illusion that enables the eyes to draw smooth and clear trajectories
after a few hours of training. This system could improve the life conditions of patients
with limbs paralysis. This work was published on the 26 th July, 2012 in the Current
Biology journal.

Write to Me Only With Thine Eyes. People "locked in" by paralyzing disorders such as Lou Gehrig's disease have long relied on blinks or facial twitches to build sentences one letter at a time. But they soon might be able to take advantage of a simpler, faster mode of communication, new research suggests. With the help of an old optical illusion, people can train their eyes to write and draw in cursive on a computer screen as quickly as they can write with a pen. In addition to providing a new medium for self-expression, the technique challenges traditional ideas about the limits of human vision.

A new technique allowing cursive writing using only eye movements received much attention this past summer when the study was published in Current Biology. In this video abstract, Jean Lorenceau of France's National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), who works at the Center for Research of the Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle Epinière (CRICM) in Paris, describes how his system works. Relying on a special flickering screen display, an eye tracker, and a visual illusion, the technique makes smooth eye movements possible, which are necessary for writing. This technique may have benefits for patients suffering from paralysis, letting them express themselves more freely, in their own written style, and providing a unique creative outlet.

A scientist studying optical illusions discovered a way that people can write with their eyes in
cursive script on a computer monitor—an innovation that could help severely disabled people
communicate more freely, and potentially lead to visual-control systems for pilots, drivers and
surgeons

A French researcher has developed a system to cursive writing and drawing on a computer screen
using only eye movements, a step forward that could take out from the silence many people with
severe disabilities.
